Tamiya
TL01
How much does it cost?
Prices vary from kit to RTR. I have seen $80.00 American up to $120.00 and beyond that. The highest I have seen is $200.00 dollars. You must look around on various web sites for the best deals.
Do you have to put it together?
You must put it together if you purchase the kit form. If you buy the RTR form, you don't need anything.
Should anything be upgraded first?
The first things that should be upgraded if you can afford are oil shocks, esc, motor, and maybe a propeller shaft if you would like. If you get a new shaft it is recommended that you upgrade the bushing to bearings. The bushing will wear if you don't upgrade them.
If I want to grip race my
Tl-01
will it be able to do so?
You could grip race if you wished to. Stock, the car is very quick but you will need the stated above hop ups and also swaybars, new springs and tires that grip a lot better.
Will I be able to get parts for my
Tl-01
at my local hobby shop?
Yes you can find many parts at many different locations. This chassis design has been around since 1997 and there are many parts available, though they are made from a thick plastic and the chassis is very rigid, nothing should be broken even after the toughest of rolls, curb strikes or crashes.
Is there any problems that I might face with the
Tl-01?
There should be no real problems, and if you get the kit form you must place the steering servo upside down and must make sure that your steering channel switch is set to reverse so you don't have mirrored steering. Also another problem you may encounter is that due to chassis roll and the stock 25mm wide wheels, small rubbing marks where the body contacts the tire may develop. They will do no paint harm, but if you paint in a white or a yellow color, you may see black or gray streaks appearing on the inside of your body.
TA02
How much does it cost?
The kit is out of production. You maybe be able to find some on EBay used. Prices will vary depending on seller. You may also check your LHS and see if you're lucky enough to still find a TA02 kit.
Do you have to put it together?
Yes, it is not a pre-built kit, and assembly IS required. Unless bought used.
Is it RTR (Ready-to-Run)?
No, unless you bought it used.
Are parts hard to come by for the TA02?
Yes and no, LHS that carry a lot of Tamiya parts will most likely have a few hop ups for it. If not the LHS can usually order the parts for you. If the LHS will not order it for you, you can order parts from 1-800-4TAMYIA.
Is this chassis versatile?
Yes, the TA02 can be used for drift, grip, or even rally. The chassis can be sold with a rally setup or a race/grip setup.
Should anything be upgraded first?
Since this chassis is very old, I would suggest upgrading the bushings to bearings. You might also want to replace the gearbox covers; they tend to loosen up over the years. The screw holes are very weak, try not to tighten them too much because they are only plastic parts.
Are the stock oil shocks worth keeping?
It is not necessary. I use 40W oil and there is not much of a difference. The shocks do get a little stiffer but not dramatically. The higher the number the denser it will be.
What Toe should I use?
Preferably 0°, the straighter the better.
What type of tires should I use for drifting?
PVCs or ABSs are usually the best option. You can also try hard rubber or rubber with electrical tape.
What type of suspension set up should I use?
If you plan to use PVC or ABS, then the stock suspension is more then fine. Using a hard suspension setup for PVC/ABS will not work as well as the stock soft setup. If you plan to go an alternative route and use rubber, a stiff suspension setup would be better.
