- Event Information
Drivers Qualifying:
Only those drivers who have entered and been accepted by D1RC for the championship may take part in the competition. All drivers must hold a current EU member country passport at the time of the competition and will be required to show it at time of registration.
Safety & security:
All drivers and any guests will be required to wear on their chest the D1RC / Driver name badge supplied at time of registration. Any persons found in the event area not wearing the badge will be removed by security. This is for the protection of drivers and, in particular, their property.
Motor sport is dangerous! Please note that D1RC is not responsible for the safety of individuals or their possessions and that individuals should ensure that valuables are safely secured at all times. All persons should act responsibly and sensibly at all times. Having fun is, however, permitted!
Event location:
You’ll find the circuit 10 miles north-east of Thetford on the A11 from London to Norwich. Coming from the south, leave the M11 at junction 9 and follow the A11. From the north or west, use the M11/A11 and join the A11 after Newmarket. Eccles Road, Attleborough and Thetford stations are on the main Cambridge to Norwich line.
The Snetterton MCC ‘Tamiya’ circuit is located within the Snetterton ‘market’ area adjacent to the large Model Shop. From the A11 dual carriageway take the exit marked Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit and them follow signs for the ‘market’ and then model shop/R/C track and finally the D1RC arrows. Set your SatNav to UK post code: NR16 2JU
Access details:
The Tamiya circuit is accessible only when the market security gates are open. Please note that the gates are normally open daily from around 07.00 to 17.30hrs BST but may be opened by special request to the Model Shop (for example, where drivers leave Saturday evening to go to their hotel). Drivers may arrive no earlier than noon (12.00) on Friday to setup their pits/tents. The track may be open for setup/practice Friday evening, as directed by D1RC officials. The track will otherwise be closed on Friday and may not be used for any purpose.
Note: Please do not walk on the track surface as this will have been cleaned for competition!
Track configuration:
On arrival – camping / parking / pits:
Upon arrival, please enter the track area as shown at top of the aerial photograph. Cars and tents should be parked / erected to the top of the picture and your own pits/gazebos etc should be erected by the track side in the area designated. If you have no pit facilities, a shared area has been provided along the left side of the picture including two large gazebos (D1RC and HPI) and a dry portacabin for cell recharging. Please remember that these areas / chairs / tables are shared and are for non-UK drivers only! All UK drivers should bring their own gazebos and pit in the green outlined area, parking and camping behind their pits.
Registration:
All drivers should first report to D1RC Drift Registration to register, receive your decal pack, BBQ ticket and be advised where to pitch tents and pits. You will also be told of any last minute changes that may exist. If you have brought guests that would like to buy extra BBQ tickets, please ask when you register.
Competition timetable:
The event will be held over the weekend 28/29 June 2008. The competition format will comprise of two elements, Saturday Qualifying and Sunday Finals. It is most important that you familiarise yourself with both the timetable and competition format as drivers failing to be ready to compete when requested may be given zero qualifying scores or be knocked out of the finals. In general, always make sure that your car is fully maintained, that you have at least 2 cell packs fully charged at all times during the event.
- Structured practice will commence at 09:00 (BST/Local time) Saturday
- Qualifying will commence at 12.00 noon Saturday
- Track closed following completion of qualifying
- (a temporary course will be set for night drifting following the evening BBQ)
- Structured practice will re-commence at 09.00 Sunday
- Finals will commence at 11.00 Sunday
- Presentations will commence at completion of the finals
Scrutineering:
All cars are required to pass scrutineering before being allowed to compete. Construction regulations are detailed in the rules and regulations threads within the D1RC forums. Cars may be called to scrutineering at any time. Cars failing to comply will not be allowed to compete.
Practice Area:
A practice area will be available to all drivers throughout the competition. Please note that only drift cars being used in the competition may use this area. Please take care as this area is not directional and cars may arrive from any direction. Please also take care regarding crystal frequencies. Remember, you car needs to last all weekend!
Competition format:
Because of the higher number of competitors, the qualifying and Tsuiso (knock out) competition format for the Euro Cup will be slightly different from that normally used at the D1RC UK Drift Series events. This will ensure that both the qualifying and Tsuiso will be better organised, quicker and the judging more consistent for all the competitors.
Qualifying:
All drivers have been randomly sorted by computer into qualifying order and then grouped into fours (4), each group of 4 identified alphabetically A-Z. Given the time needed to get through the qualifying of around 50 drivers, each making one practice run followed by three judged runs, it is considered important that each driver should get some track practice time before his runs. To overcome this, each group will be called for a brief practice session before qualifying, as follows:
- Group A practice
- Group B practice
- Group A qualifying
- Group C practice
- Group B qualifying
- Group D practice
- Group C qualifying
- Group E practice
etc.
In this way, no one will be off the track for more than a short while before competing. The groups will be called to practice or qualify in order by the D1RC officials.
When a group is called up to practice, all 4 drivers should take to the rostrum and drive single laps of the drift circuit in turn (structured practice rules apply) returning to queue behind the waiting cars at the start line. The practice session will run for approx 10 minutes and attendance throughout is optional. A D1RC official will advise when the session is over.
When a group is called up for qualifying, the four (4) drivers will all come to the rostrum where there will be a small “Power Up” area where the drivers about to qualify can turn on their cars and make sure they are working. Within each group of 4 drivers there is a driver running order. The first (1st) driver in the group should go straight up to the rostrum and begin qualifying under the direction of the judge with the second (2nd) driver waiting up on the rostrum but standing well back ready to qualify when it is their turn. As the 1st driver completes qualifying and descends, the third driver should make his way up, and so on. Waiting drivers should remain at the trackside. At no time should anyone but the qualifying driver and the next waiting driver be on the rostrum.
As the group completes qualifying, the next group of four drivers will be called to the “Power Up” area and wait to go up onto the rostrum to qualify after the practice group session completes. Once all the groups have practiced and qualified, qualifying will be over and the scores will be sorted. All drivers will then be put into their Tsuiso final group. The Tsuiso final groups will be identified by letter, the top seven (7) qualifying drivers going into the A-Final and so on down to the lowest final with seven drivers in each group.
Finals:
Each Tsuiso final will consist of eight (8) drivers pairing up and using the usual knock out style competition format. However, because we will be running multiple finals so that all drivers will take part, after qualifying drivers will be put into groups of seven (7) and put into your correct letter final, be it A, B, C etc. The 8th driver in your final group will be given to the winner of the final below yours, or put another way, the winner of each final will be promoted into the final above. For example, the winner of the B-Final will go up to the A-Final and slot into the eighth (8th) position. This will give all drivers the chance to perform to their best and show their skill if they had a bad qualifying as, in theory, the last placed qualifier could go all the way through the finals to win the A-Final.
Scoring - qualifying:
Finally, in qualifying, we will be running a scoring-zone apex system alongside our usual scoring system. On the specified clipping points on the track, lines will be drawn onto the track in increasing sizes from the apex outwards marked 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. These numbers denote the amount of points lost if you pass through this area. If at any point, the nose of the car goes through an area that will be the amount of points taken into account when your final score is decided. Zero (0) points will be deducted if the nose of your car passed through only the zero (0) score zone, one (1) point will be deducted if the nose of your car passed through the one (1) score zone and so on. There will be spotters out on the track with scorecards telling the Judge what score zone the driver passed through and these spotters will be trusted and responsible volunteers that will be asked by D1RC to do this task. This may be you!
Please note that the general rules and construction regulations that will apply are detailed in the rules and regulations threads of the D1RC forums. Printed copies will be available but all drivers are well advised print their own copies and to read these carefully and check their cars fully comply as cars failing to pass scrutineering will not be allowed to compete.
Weather:
Thoughout Europe, and the rest of the world, the weather has become very unpredictable and no longer can we assume that summers are dry. Forum agreement has been gained to run the event ‘come what may’, rain or shine, so please bring suitable waterproofing materials to keep you electrics dry in the event of rain. We will try to reschedule the main competition content into predicted dry periods if we can – for example, if rain is forecast Sunday, we will run as much of the programme as possible on Saturday so be prepared for some rescheduling.
Just as important – bring sun block and hats in case of a heat wave!
Judging:
The D1RC Head Judge’s decisions will be final. Please accept his scoring gracefully and to be his fair and unbiased assessment.
Prizes/trophies:
Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top places as available. It would be very much appreciated if ALL competitors and guests remained in attendance throughout the presentations and showed their appreciation of the very high skill levels displayed over the weekend in the usual manner – much applause and general abuse!
And finally….
So far as we’re aware, nothing of this scale has been organised in the world of RC Drifting, all without any manufacturer or business involvement beyond trophy and prize contributions. Please help us help you to enjoy the weekend by supporting the organisers through any unforeseen crisis that may occur! I promise you, many hundreds of unpaid hours of planning have gone into arranging this event – your entry fees well invested in goods and services aimed to make the weekend a great one. Eddie and JT really hope you have a great time. And anyway, it’s about time we all got together and made some new friends!
